What's New

Added 26 May 2009: Newlyn Copper

A new book Newlyn Copper: Arts and Crafts Copper Work in Newlyn by Daryl Bennett and Colin Pill is a comprehensive account of how the Newyn Industrial Class was established and how it developed. Fully illustrated in colour, the book is available on request, at 25 GBP plus postage. Please contact us for details.
Newlyn Copper Exhibition at Geffrye Museum from 9th June 2009. The exhibition has been well attended and much appreciated at several venues: Cannon Hall, South Yorkshire; Penlee House, Penzance, Cornwall; and Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum. It will be at the Geffrye Museum in London from 9th June. From the Penlee House catalogue:
The exhibition is a tribute to the work of J.D.Mackenzie for his designs and his leadership of the Class but it is also, most importantly, an appreciation of the skill of the craftsmen. We know so little of the men themselves, Phillip Hodder master craftsmen in the early years, who created the Newlyn Art Gallery Plaques is thought to have died of verdergris poisoning at the age of 40 years. Obed Nicholls, confined to a wheelchair since childhood became one of the most creative and skilled workers of the Class and like Hodder he inscribed some of his work. However, many pieces of Newlyn are unmarked and most unattributable to any individual craftsman. Together however the craftsmen created an important cultural heritage, their work easily recognised in construction and design and now greatly respected as part of the legacy of the British Arts and Crafts movement.
Talk on Newlyn Copper, 20th June 2009. Daryl Bennett will give a talk on Newlyn Copper to the Mackintosh Society on 20th June at the Geffrye Museum.
An article in Antique Collector by Daryl Bennett was published in May 2009. Newlyn Copper is featured in the BBC Home and Antiques magazine April 2009.
