Newlyn Gallery Plaques
The Victor Passmore Art Gallery in Newlyn is decorated with large copper plaques - each one about four foot square. Today they are
rather corroded and their details hard to make out. Fortunately photographs of them were published in The Studio in 1896, only a year after they were mounted. The following is a quote from The Studio, 1896:
Mr J.D. Mackenzie represents the metal class at Newlyn. With the aid of assistant Mr Hodder, four large copper plaques have been executed for the front of the Newlyn Art Galley, representing earth, air, fire and water. These plaques were beaten on lead by Mr Hodder according to the system pursued by Pearson.
